Taking a “Work-Cation” In Greece

From May 13 – May 26 of 2017, I joined my brother on a fun trip to Greece and Croatia. I had informed my clients in advance that I would be providing my VA Services from abroad. Therefore, I had no idea what I would be in for.

Fortunately, I found a good checklist to use for said trip.

Travel

Both travel days would be about 19 hours. Ten on the flight to Turkey. Turkish Airlines was one of the better accommodating airlines I have ever taken. Thankfully, they provided us with 2 meals, snacks, plenty of beverages, pillow & blanket, and a comfort travel pack with some hygiene products.

The flight out was surprisingly good. Additionally, we had no trouble with customs or passport check-ins at all during the trip. This may be due to the off-season travel.

I checked in on social media throughout the first travel date. Thankfully, a friend lent me a converter so I was able to use it at the layover in Turkey.

We arrived at our first spot in Athens. A particularly groovy loft in a hipster location. It was a Saturday night and the local club was hoppin’…until 5 AM! Consequently, sleep would be difficult and jet-lag hit me on the 3rd day. But it was beautiful and so alive!

Technology

The first thing I noticed when trying to post social media for my clients was getting locked out due to the Greece location check-in I promptly emailed my clients and they responded quickly. Problem solved. Fortunately, this was the only technical issue during the whole trip!

I kept my Google Pixel phone close at all times for many reasons. “What’s App” provided free phone calls and texts back home. Google Maps was a bit wonky in Croatia but fine in Greece.

Working From The Deck

My favorite spot was in Oia on the Greek Island of Santorini. What a blast! Working on the deck was beautiful and inspiring. I can say the same about Dubrovnik, Croatia. Some days it rained and so I worked inside the cave house we were renting in Oia. I cannot complain about that. Such beauty and peace!
I have considered the possibility of working overseas for a few months of each year and if my budget provides, I will follow up on this. That is just how great this experience has been for me!

Return Home

As expected, the return trip took longer. Additionally, the Google Pixel I held so close to me was lost in Greece. Fortunately, I have a good warranty and a new one is on its way!

Ultimately, I would recommend the Digital Nomad experiment to anyone who loves adventure – E
